If eating healthier is on your list of New Year’s resolutions (again) this year, you can still stick to your diet without giving up tacos—well, sort of. Enter the “skinny” del Mar taco served up at popular Peachtree Corners eatery Taqueria del Mar.
With your choice of chicken, steak, shrimp or salmon, this healthier version of a taco replaces the traditional flour or corn tortilla with a romaine lettuce leaf acting as the shell. Inside, cucumber slices add sufficient crunch, while pico and avocado serve as more nutritious fillers than cheese or sour cream. A light, bright cilantro vinaigrette tops it off. The only caveat: this taco is not easy to eat. Be prepared to get extra messy (an extra handful of napkins should help) or tackle it with a fork and knife like a tostada.
If you need a little extra to fill up, consider trying their frijoles charros—wood-fired black beans with dry cured bacon—for a smoky and tasty side that’s deeply satisfying.
The menu also offers more than a dozen specialty tacos, many with unique, non-traditional combinations, like the BLT with a spicy chipotle sauce and bacon, or the East Bound & Down taco with pulled pork, agave coleslaw and bacon BBQ sauce.
A plethora of house specials abound, including a “skinny” taco salad for another light option. And, if cold weather has you craving something warm, the poblano and corn chowder is a bowl of extra-creamy sweetness that goes down fast (but we’re pretty sure that one isn’t as diet-friendly!).
