Less than a year after opening its doors at Ponce City Market, the restaurant, winery and music venue City Winery is changing its culinary direction with a new chef and a new menu.
Don Cherry is now heading up the kitchen as executive chef. He studied at Le Cordon Bleu and has worked at Wolfgang Puck, Gunshow, Southern Art and the Cherokee Town and Country Club.
Cherry replaces Jeffrey McGar, a 25-year restaurant industry veteran who has worked in such local establishments as the Atlanta Events Center at Opera, Atlanta Improv, Czar Ice Bar and Cellar 56.

The venue's culinary vibe is moving from "upscale comfort food with a Southern flair to an approachable culinary tour of the world’s wine regions," according to a press release.
While menu staples such as buttermilk fried chicken and shrimp and grits remain, new dishes will be featured starting Feb. 8 including Prince Edward Island Mussels made with City Winery Chardonnay, lemon white wine butter, toasted baguette and fresh herbs, and a Maple Leaf Farms Duck Cassoulet made with white bean stew, confit duck leg and house-made duck sausage.
"At City Winery, I have the opportunity to do something no other chef in Atlanta can do – pair our dishes with wine we make in-house," Cherry said.
In addition to the new dining room menu, Cherry will also build menus for City Winery's private events and wine and food programming, and plans to update the Canine Cuisine menu, which offers brunch-only items for customers' dogs on the eatery's patio.
