Today the Food and Drug Administration finalized two rules that mandate calorie counts must be listed on all menus and menu boards for chain restaurants (those with 20 or more locations), vending machines and similar retail food establishments. This counts for chain movie theaters' concessions, convenience store ready-made food and vending machines by operators of 20 or more vending machines.
Americans eat and drink more than one-third of their total calories away from home, and these rulings are set in place in hopes that consumers will make better conscious decisions about food choices. In cities like New York, where similar rules have already been in place, research has shown that only 30 percent of consumers actually pay attention to the calorie counts.
What are you thoughts on this labeling law? Are you in the 30 percent that will look before you order?
