Second Self Beer Co. celebrates its fifth anniversary on Saturday from noon-10pm. Look for

30 different beer offerings both inside and outside the taproom, with plenty of collaborations, one-off beers, and a "beer raw bar" featuring several no-boil fruited Berliner Weisse beers from the cellar. For more info and tickets: https://www.secondselfbeer.com/celebrating-5-years.

Among the anniversary collaborations, El Velorio, which translates to ‘The Wake,’ is a collaboration with two local businesses also celebrating an anniversary this month: Puerto Rican pop-up restaurant My Abuelas, and coffee roaster Slow Wave Coffee.

Named in reference to the Puerto Rican custom of serving hot chocolate at funerals, a portion of the proceeds from each beer sold will go towards benefitting disaster relief for Puerto Rico.

And in honor of all that, El Velorio is this week’s Beer Pick.

Beer Pick

El Velorio Imperial Porter

Second Self Beer Co., Atlanta

Available on draft and in 16- ounce cans for a limited time

Profile

Second Self teamed up pop-up restaurant My Abuelas and coffee roaster Slow Wave Coffee to create this hot chocolate-inspired Imperial Porter made with beans from Julian Coffee Roasters and Cortes Sweet Chocolate.

The result is a big, dark-roasted, 9% beer that has lots of the bittersweet coffee and chocolate flavors and aromas you’d expect, along with quickly dissipating carbonation under foamy brown head.

Pair with

If you’re looking for a cheap thrill, trying pouring El Velorio into to a big coffee mug, and pair it with cake doughnuts or churros for dunking.
