While it’s fun to look at photos of fabulous homes online, it’s an even more inspiring experience to stand in a remodeled kitchen and think, “This is a space I can work in!”
Those looking for inspiring home ideas will have that real-time chance during the upcoming Tour of Remodeled Homes, where visitors will leave with ideas, insights and a hands-on feel for how a reworked space can be transformative. Sponsored by the Atlanta chapter of the National Association for the Remodeling Industry, the tour opens the doors to four recent projects in Dunwoody, north Atlanta and Roswell where representatives from the remodeling firms will be on hand to answer questions about the projects they completed.
In keeping with current remodeling trends, two of those properties feature rehabbed kitchens.
“Kitchens and bathrooms will always be very hot because they’re the areas in the home where people spend most of their time,” said Jesse Morado, NARI Atlanta’s executive director. “Now with open floor plans, the kitchen is even more conducive to entertaining, and it’s a good place for the family to congregate. And new bathrooms and kitchens are projects that add the most value to a home.”
Remodeling overall is booming in Atlanta, said Morado. “We’re probably at or above where we were in 2006-2007. People are sticking around and remodeling, so Atlanta is a very hot market.”
At the Roswell house, Mark Galey of Master Home Remodelers in Sandy Springs reworked an outdated kitchen into a classic, with gold, marble counters; beaded, inset cabinetry; a wood range hood; dark wood floors; and chrome and brass fixtures.
“A lot of cabinet styles and colors change, just like clothes and cars,” said Galey. “The owner wanted something timeless and wanted the stove to be the focal points. We picked a large marble backsplash with gold tones and big marble slab for the island that adds an interesting detail.”
In Dunwoody, Oneida Builders updated a kitchen with clean, contemporary lines. The back splash, inspired by Italian mosaics, is a custom blend of glass tiles. Other highlights include a heat-resistant wall cabinet to house a TV over the range, a coffee bar and a full beverage bar.
In north Atlanta, crews from Distinctive Remodeling Solutions spent three years turning a 1956 ranch house into a space suited for a modern family, with an open first-floor plan, a new kitchen, a spacious master suite and new family room, mud room and laundry area.
“The original house had all the living areas on the main level, and that worked with current trends of having an expansive main floor,” said Distinctive owner Mark Buelow. “The footprint was there; we just needed to rearrange and update it.”
The tour also features a second Dunwoody home where Harbour Towne Construction transformed a basement into a multi-functional entertaining area, and an open house at Dove Studio Kitchen and Bath in Roswell.
