Days before the start of fall, temperatures in metro Atlanta neared 90 degrees.

“It’s dry,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “It’s warm.”

But while there is a 20 percent chance of rain, the area is likely to stay dry overnight and clouds will break up about 9 p.m., Channel 2 Chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

Currently, the temperature is 87 degrees in Atlanta after a high of 88. The average high for this time of year is 81.

Highs in the 80s are expected all week.

“We will see a few showers later today,” Monahan said. “Not right now, though.”

There is a 20 percent rain chance again Wednesday.

“These won’t be severe thunderstorms, really not even heavy downpours,” Monahan said.

While things are calm locally, meteorologists are closely watching two hurricanes.

Maria made landfall overnight on the island of Dominica as a Category 5 storm with 160-mph winds.

After briefly dropping to Category 4 strength, Maria is “back to 160-mph winds and Category 5, going to the Virgin Islands, U.S. and British, and Puerto Rico tonight and early (Wednesday) morning,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

Hurricane Jose was causing dangerous surf and rip currents along the East Coast and bringing wind gusts of 90 mph. Forecasters said the storm is not likely to make landfall.
