For one minute in 2015, a former Google employee and researcher owned the Google.com domain name. Now the company has said how much it paid to reward the man.
Sanmay Ved, an MBA candidate at Babson College, detailed the purchase in a LinkedIn post in September 2015.
On a whim, he decided to search for Google.com while getting to know the company's Domains interface.
To his surprise, thethe world's most popular domain name was listed as available for an affordable $12.
He successfully bought the domain name but received a pair of emails from Google within about a minute. He received an order cancellation from Google Domains and was later offered a cash reward.
"I wrote back and told them it was never about money, and asked that the money be donated to charity to the Art of Living India Foundation," he said.
So how much did Google pay?
"Our initial financial reward to Sanmay -- $6,006.13 – spelled-out Google, numerically (squint a little and you'll see it!," the company wrote in a blog post Thursday. "We then doubled this amount when Sanmay donated his reward to charity."
