David Plazas started his journalism career in 2000 at The News-Press in Fort Myers, Florida rising in the ranks from bureau reporter to senior editor. He covered education and local politics. He was the founding editor of the Spanish-language weekly Gaceta Tropical and then became community conversations editor -- a new spin on the editorial page editor position, focusing on bringing communities together in dialogue both in person and online. He joined The Tennessean in 2014 as opinion and engagement editor, eventually overseeing the USA TODAY Network Tennessee's opinion strategy across several publications. He led the organization's Civility Tennessee campaign; started a video podcast called Tennessee Voices and produced more than 450 episodes; led the Black and Latino Tennessee Voices initiatives; and worked on massive projects related to housing, transit and voter engagement in local and state elections, moderating gubernatorial, senatorial and local candidate forums. He is excited to be moving to Georgia with his family to contribute to The AJC's longstanding stellar work and contribute with his expertise on building community, amplifying diverse voices and promoting a culture of civil discourse.
