The girls soccer teams from Fayette County schools appear poised for another long postseason run.

McIntosh, Whitewater and Starr’s Mill all reached the Class AAAA semifinals last season, with Starr’s Mill beating McIntosh in the semifinals and then Whitewater for the championship.

They have continued their hot tournament play this season, winning their first-round playoff games last week by a combined score of 25-0, and head into Tuesday’s second-round ranked in the top six in the Georgia High School Soccer Coaches poll.

No. 1 McIntosh beat Houston County 8-0 last week and hosts No. 8 Glynn Academy at 7 p.m. McIntosh (14-4-1) has won four consecutive games since a 1-1 tie against Class AAAAA No. 1 Harrison on April 9.

No. 2 Whitewater will play at No. 9 Richmond Hill at 5 p.m. Whitewater (15-3-1) advanced with an 8-0 victory against Thomas County Central in the first round. Sixth-ranked Starr’s Mill (12-6-1) beat Warner Robins 9-0 in the first round and will travel to Greenbrier for a 5:30 p.m. game.

“The four playoff teams from our region [3-AAAA] are very strong and I think the odds are good that they could all make it to the semifinals,” McIntosh coach Marcia Clark said. “Of course, anything can happen on any given day and that's what makes the playoffs so exciting.”

Third-ranked Union Grove, the other playoff team from Region 3-AAAA, advanced with a 7-0 victory against Lee County and hosts Lakeside-Evans at 6 p.m.

McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater have each won at least one state title since 2005 and have combined for 12 championships since 1992.

Other high-profile second-round games include the defending AAAAA champion North Gwinnett girls, ranked No. 4, traveling to No. 3 Milton tonight and the No. 4 Brookwood boys at top-ranked Lassiter in a Class AAAAA game on Wednesday.
