Braves right handed pitcher Gavin Floyd is set to take the first step towards pitching again.
On Thursday, Floyd is traveling to New York for a check-up with Dr. David Altcheck, the surgeon who performed Floyd’s Tommy John surgery in May 2013. Altcheck also performed Floyd’s most recent surgery to repair a fractured olecranon (elbow) he suffered on June 21 while throwing a curveball against the Nationals in Washington.
“I think that tomorrow we’ll kind of see what the x-ray looks like and probably get some conversation in,” Floyd said. “It’s probably going to a process of taking x-rays, seeing how it’s healing.”
Floyd pitched only nine games in 2014 before fracturing his elbow. In those nine starts, Floyd was 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA and in 54 1/3 innings.
Floyd said he isn’t sure if the protocol for rehabbing his elbow will change or increase after his check-up.
“I’ve been doing some cardio, trying to stay a little bit in shape as much as I can without moving too much, or doing more stationary stuff,” Floyd said.
Since starting some light workouts he said he hasn’t experienced any pain or soreness. Floyd said over the four long weeks he’s been recovering, he feels his elbow has been strengthening and progressing.
“When it gets to a point of it looking like (my elbow) is 100 percent healthy, I’m not sure what it looks like from there.”
