The Braves traveled from New York to Milwaukee without pitcher Julio Teheran, who was sent back to Atlanta because of an illness following his Wednesday start in a 6-2 loss at Yankee Stadium.
Teheran, who gave up five runs, two homers and four walks in five innings of the series-finale defeat on a hot, humid afternoon, apparently began feeling ill late in the game or afterward – he declined to speak to reporters because of his sickness – and the decision was made to send him home since he wasn’t supposed to pitch in a four-game series against the Brewers that began Thursday.
Braves manager Brian Snitker said Teheran likely will make his next scheduled start Tuesday against Toronto in the opener of a two-game series at SunTrust Park. He also said the illness didn’t contribute to Teheran’s struggles against the Yankees.
“Afterward he felt something,” Snitker said. “So we flew him home, and he’ll just continue and get better there. He can do his (between starts) throwing there. ... That didn’t have anything to do with his start, he was fine.”
Teheran, a disappointing 6-6 with a 4.47 ERA, gave up a three-run homer to Giancarlo Stanton on an 0-2 fastball in the third inning, and the Yankees cruised from their to a second consecutive win to clinch the three-game series.
The Braves’ five-time opening-day starter and two-time former All-Star is 2-5 with a 5.56 ERA in his past eight starts, allowing nine homers and 25 walks in 43-2/3 innings over that stretch, including three or more walks in all but one start. He’s had an erratic season, to put it mildly: Among his 17 starts, he’s allowed one or no earned runs six times and four or more earned runs seven times.
