Just a week after Evan Gattis was scratched from the Braves lineup at the last minute with viral symptoms, he was scratched again Tuesday night before the start of the Braves’ game against the Reds with a right wrist strain.
Gattis injured his wrist taking swings during batting practice Tuesday afternoon.
“I took a couple swings and started feeling sore, just out of nowhere,” said Gattis, who was wearing a soft brace on his right wrist after Tuesday’s game. “So I’ll take another day, see where I’m at tomorrow and just go from there.”
He was examined by the Braves hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie. X-rays taken on his wrist were negative.
“Nothing structural,” Gattis said. “…It’s hard to do anything anyway structurally to a bone swinging a bat. A lot of times it’s tendons and stuff like that.”
Gattis missed more than two months of his Double-A season in 2012 with strained tendons in his left wrist lifting a bag into an overhead compartment on the team bus. He was in a cast for several weeks and got a platelet-rich plasma injection.
This injury is to his right wrist. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said the Braves don’t see it as a long-term problem.
“We’re just going to call it day to day for right now,” Gonzalez said.
When asked if he thought he would be able to get back in the lineup in the next couple of days, Gattis said: “I’m hoping so.”
Gattis just missed four games last week recovering from his stomach-related illness. He returned to the lineup for two games, and hit two home runs in a 7-0 win against the Rockies on Sunday.
“As soon as I start coming back feeling good, then (a) little something like this comes up,” Gattis said. “It’s definitely frustrating.”
