Braves utility player Jace Peterson is keeping close tabs on the flooding back home in his native southwest Louisiana and might ask to leave the team for a couple of days this week if the situation gets much worse.
Peterson was raised outside Lake Charles and makes his permanent home in the city. His parents live outside town and are on higher ground, but they’ve also received torrential rain and have concerns about potential flooding at their house.
Hurricane Harvey hit Texas this weekend and the remnants are now moving into Louisiana.
Peterson said his house is elevated a little more than others on his street in the city, but that two houses on the street already had “water up to the doors” by Monday afternoon according to his aunt, who lives across the street from him.
His father has kept Peterson updated regularly on the situation, and concern was apparent on Peterson’s face as he prepared for Monday night’s series opener against the Phillies, checking his phone between an early batting-practice session and individual fielding drills with coach Ron Washington.
A friend had sent him photos from Houston, where massive, widescale flooding has brought the city to a standstill.
“It’s supposed to be worse the next couple of days,” Peterson said, adding that he would continue to monitor the situation closely before deciding in the next day or two if he needs to go back and be with family members.
