The Tybee Island Lighthouse serves as a dramatic backdrop to Tybee's North Beach. Soon, it could also serve the same purpose on Georgia license plates.
State Rep. Jesse Petrea (R-Savannah), chair of the House Human Relations & Aging Committee, announced last week the two final designs of a proposed license plate, the revenue from which would support the Tybee Island Historical Society.
During the 2021 legislative session, Petrea introduced House Bill 203 to create this new license plate, which would depict the Tybee Island lighthouse.
But in order for that to happen, the plates need pre-orders. In order for the bill to gain passage during the 2022 legislative session, 1,000 of these specialty tags must be pre-purchased.
The plates are $27 to pre-order, $25 of which will go to the Tybee Island Historical Society, and $2 will pay for the online processing of the pre-order.
If the bill passes the 2022 legislative session, $25 from the pre-order will be deducted from the $55 total cost of the plate. If the bill doesn't pass, order holders don't get their money back. It will be considered a donation to the TIHS.
“The Tybee Island Historical Society helps protect and maintain one of our most beloved coastal Georgia treasures, the Tybee Island lighthouse and museum,” said Petrea in a press release. “I encourage all Georgians to support the future of the historical society and help make this special license plate a reality by voting for a final design and preordering their own plate before September 1.”
There are two designs up for consideration.
The "Morning Moonset" design, by Dawn Tanis, features the lighthouse against a mostly white background, with a full, red-colored moon setting behind it, with sand dunes bordering the bottom of the plate.
The second, unnamed design by Kathryn Boaen features a more photo-realistic view of the lighthouse, with a partly cloudy blue sky backdrop, palm trees and a grassy lawn lining the bottom border.
The TIHS will collect preorders of the tag and tally the votes for the preferred design.
You can vote for your preferred design through September 1, 2021. To vote for one of the two final designs, go to www.tybeelighthouse.org/license-plate-poll.
