A woman who struck and killed a 17-year-old on Lawrenceville Highway was charged with vehicular homicide Thursday.
Sharon Mitchell-Golden, 49, was driving northbound on Lawrenceville Highway in her 2007 Land Rover Wednesday morning when she struck Dakota M. Waters as he stood outside the crosswalk in the center turn lane near James Road, police said.
Waters was attempting to cross the highway around 7:24 a.m. between Hamilton Road and James Road when the accident occurred, police said.
Mitchell-Golden entered the center turn lane to turn left onto James Road. She was unable to stop and struck Waters, police said. Waters was taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center where he died of his injuries.
Mitchell-Golden was charged with second degree vehicular homicide, which is a misdemeanor, and a turn lane violation — driving more than 300 feet in the center turn lane. She turned herself in on Thursday. Police said weather conditions might have contributed to the accident, but speed and alcohol are not considered contributing factors.
