Q: I see that they are doing construction on Northside Drive where the Bobby Jones Golf Course was. Can you tell me what they’re building there? Will the golf course remain or are there plans for a new venue?
—Sandra Rousseau, Atlanta
A: Construction has been underway for several months and is progressing well, Marty Elgison, president of the Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation, a nonprofit organization overseeing the project, told Q&A on the News via email.
The project is proceeding in three phases, he wrote. Phase 1 is building the parking deck and new tennis courts, Phase 2 is the golf course (featuring a reversible 9-hole course), driving range and Cupp Links for juniors, he wrote. Phase 3 is the Georgia Golf House, including the restaurant and golf shop.
Phases 1 and 2 are underway. The schedule calls for Phase 1 to be completed and the new tennis courts open by July.
“Most of the major earth-moving for the golf course should be completed by then also, after which the course will be grassed,” he wrote.
Phase 3 is tentatively scheduled for August, he added.
“Assuming the weather cooperates, the new course and range will be open for play by fall of this year. We’ll operate out of a temporary golf shop until Phase 3 is completed,” he wrote.
The redevelopment of the course and clubhouse is expected to cost about $23 million. The historic course was built in 1932 as Atlanta’s first public golf course.
