A popular 16-year-old junior at Floyd County’s Model High School was killed in a wreck Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Floyd County police Sgt. Baker Harbin told the Rome News-Tribune that Alexander "Alex" Crumbley was driving east on Ward Mountain Road about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when another vehicle pulled out into the road.

When Crumbley hit the brakes, his Chevrolet Blazer went off the right side of the road.

“It appears,” Harbin said, “he over-corrected.”

The SUV flipped several times, ejecting Crumbley, who Harbin said was not wearing a seat belt. He was taken to Floyd Medical Center, where he died.

Two teenage passengers in the SUV were wearing seat belts, and were not seriously injured, according to Harbin.

Crumbley, who played tuba in the Model High marching band, “was a wonderful young man, a very popular young man,” principal Glenn White told the News-Tribune.

“It’s definitely a tragic loss for our school,” he said. “I can’t think of anything worse than this.”
