Shrimp season will open Tuesday in Georgia.

The state’s Department of Natural Resources made the announcement Wednesday, clearing the way for both commercial shrimpers and recreational cast netters to prepare to harvest white shrimp — the biggest component in Georgia’s seafood industry — along the state’s coast.

Local surveys indicate a majority of the shrimp are now large enough, despite the spawning period for shrimp having been slightly delayed this year as a result of cooler than normal water temperatures, officials said.

This is the first time this year shrimping will be allowed. Last year’s season closed Dec. 31, after shrimpers reported harvesting more than 1 million pounds of white shrimp with a value of about $5 million.
