Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Thursday that Americans want to lift former President Jimmy Carter up in prayer.

Carter, who announced Wednesday that he's been diagnosed with cancer, has "set an example of what it means to really be a good American."

“We can have sharp disagreements,” Huckabee said, “but when it comes to appreciation and recognition of a person who has served our country as a president and especially one who’s post-presidential life has all been about public service and humanitarian work around the world, how do you have anything but honest and deep respect and appreciation?”

Huckabee said that he and his wife know Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. He’s spoken at Carter’s church.

“We’ve known them and have great respect and admiration for his contribution to this country and his patriotism,” Huckabee said.
