State Rep. Tom Taylor pleaded guilty Monday in Rabun County to driving under the influence of alcohol and an open container violation, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Under the plea agreement, Taylor was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine, placed on 12 months of probation and must complete 40 hours of community service.

The Dunwoody Republican was arrested April 7 in Rabun County after being clocked driving 72 mph in a 45 mph zone. According to a city of Clayton police report, his blood-alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit and he had a pistol on his hip. There were also four exchange students in the car at the time but, because they were all at least 16 years old, he did not also face child endangerment charges.

Taylor had said previously that he would not fight the charges, saying the incident was his wake-up call that he has a drinking problem.

Taylor, the chairman of the joint House-Senate committee that oversees MARTA, easily won a GOP primary race in May against challenger Tom Owens. He faces no opposition in November for re-election to the Legislature representing House District 79.
