Pelosi is notable as first female speaker of the House

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is celebrating her 80th birthday Thursday, March 26.

Pelosi represents the 12th District of California in the U.S. House of Representatives. She has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame for her leadership and is considered the highest-ranking female elected official in United States history.

In her role, Pelosi has presided over the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and then again since 2019. She is also second in line of succession to the president after the vice president.

She champions various liberal causes such as the Affordable Care Act, reproductive and women’s rights, and environmental issues.

Pelosi started the formal impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. You may know her most recently as the highlight of a certain internet meme, after controversially ripping apart a copy of Trump’s State of the Union address.

Pelosi spent her 80th birthday at the Capitol, speaking to the press Thursday morning about the stimulus bill meant to help the economy during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Tomorrow we'll bring the bill to the floor. It will pass," she said, according to Guardian's live update. "It will pass with strong bipartisan support."

She also pointed out that Congress is "just not doing enough for state and local government. That's just the way it is."

According to an interview with Variety, family is important to Pelosi, and she calls each of her five children every night. She lives in San Francisco with husband Paul. Pelosi has nine grandchildren.

She told reporters during the press briefing that she would not celebrate the significant birthday until she could “hug [her] grandchildren.”
