Police officers who went to a Dunwoody home recently to serve a warrant for a probation violation were alarmed to find the residents hoarding dozens — and dozens and dozens — of rabbits.
According to a Dunwoody police incident report, most of the 77 rabbits were running loose inside the home on Cobb Drive off Tilly Mill Road.
“A strong odor of ammonia/urine was apparent throughout the entire residence,” the report stated. “Even though some rabbits were observed to be contained in cages, most rabbits were observed to be freely roaming throughout the interior of the house.”
According to police, officers found a lack of proper food and water for the animals, which the residents said were being kept for “rescue purposes.” Some of the rabbits showed signs of neglect and/or abuse, police said.
Police charged two adults living in the home with animal cruelty. One person was also charged with failure to appear in court for a traffic violation and a third person was charged with illegal possession of a prescription drug.
A child in the home was turned over to a relative, police said.
DeKalb Animal Control removed some of the rabbits, while about 40 of the animals were taken to the Jellystone Park Camp Resort, a campground in Bremen.
Campground employee Denise Barnby said that they will try to find homes for the rabbits and those unable to be placed in homes will be set free to roam the campground.
“We let them go on our property and everyone in the campground gets to enjoy them and feed them,” she said.
