Publix just announced it would no longer require all of its stores to implement one-way aisles as had been the case since the COVID-19 outbreak in March.
The store announced via its Twitter account Monday that it would not require the social distancing measure except for in the case that a local ordinance makes it mandatory. The grocery store chain runs more than 2,500 locations in Georgia, Florida and other parts of the South.
“They were initially adopted to help our customers understand and practice social distancing and over time, we’ve adopted this into our routines,” said a tweet to a customer from Publix Help.
Publix will still have overhead announcements, signs and markers on the floor at checkout to remind people to maintain their distance as they shop. Customers and employees have been required to wear masks while inside since July.
Publix has also increased sanitation efforts through frequent and regular cleaning of high-touch surfaces including carts, door handles, PIN pads, ATMs and vending machines, using a disinfection cleaner before every store opens and throughout the day.
There are also plexiglass shields at all registers and pharmacies to help protect employees and shoppers.
