A dog is recovering after Broken Arrow police and firefighters rescued him last week from an creek.

Police say Teddy, a Collie mix, may have been hit by a car when he fell into Haikey Creek and was stuck  there for a long time. Rescuers speculate that he may have just fallen in while trying to get a drink.

The 8-year-old dog is a bit overweight, which rescuers say may have contributed to his long time in the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, creek.

Teddy reportedly bit a rescuer while they were trying to get him out of the water, but they do not believe he shows any signs of rabies. He is on a rabies quarantine to ensure that he does not have the disease.

The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals, a non-profit organization, took Teddy in, which bought him time to recover.

Had he been brought to the local animal shelter, Tuesday would be his last day allowed there.

Veterinary experts are running tests on Teddy because they say he is very lethargic and not acting well. They will assess him after the results of the tests come back and he will be put up for adoption if they are unable to find his owner.

If he is adopted, Teddy’s new owner will need to put him on a diet to lower his weight.

Those interested in helping Teddy may donate to Oklahoma Alliance for Animals.
