High school incident appalling, not typical

Sportsmanship in football took a “sack” with the recent attack of the Warren County coach. What you expect to see at the end of a game is coaches and players shaking hands and showing respect to each other for a hard-fought game. That’s what the sport is about: give it your all, but once the final whistle blows, it’s over. Unfortunately, when you have intense competition, emotions run high. In some cases, rational people do irrational things that are later regretted.

We are appalled by this kind of behavior, but have to remember that there were thousands of football games played the weekend of the attack, in which players and coaches behaved appropriately — and displayed the sportsmanship that is a major part of the game.

Investigate Attorney General in gun case

The AJC has obviously been trying to bring more balance to the Opinion page. That being said, one must wonder at the failure to call out the Obama administration on the “Fast and Furious” scandal.

Attorney General Eric Holder is either lying or incompetent; either he knew about the operation or he was woefully negligent in not knowing. In either case, the AJC has a responsibility to demand that he resign from office — or tell us why it doesn’t matter.

Write checks to avoid bank check card fees

As the big banks are imposing fees for using debit cards, we should all start writing checks again. Processing checks is a more cumbersome process than processing electronic transactions. Let’s help the banks shoot themselves in the foot.

Sowell’s ‘intellectual’ column plain dumb

The Oct. 18 Opinion section (unfortunately) carried another column, “Intellectually, Obama way behind Gingrich,” by Thomas Sowell. Oddly, I find nothing in Sowell’s piece other than the tavern talk taunt that if President Barack Obama and Newt Gingrich were to debate, Gingrich would “chew him up and spit him out.” If he has any supporting examples for this statement, he apparently forgot to mention them while moving on to other “random thoughts.”
