Decency no longer matters for today’s Dems

Presidents Clinton and Obama have created today’s atmosphere. From sexual assault to transforming America, their actions when in office are responsible for today’s demonstrations and harassment of anyone who agrees with conservative values. Examples include the gun attack on a GOP congressman at baseball practice; the mobs in Sen. Grassley’s office; restaurant harassment of Sen. Cruz, Sarah Sanders and Kirstjen Nielsen; sidewalk harassment of Betsy DeVos, and of course the verbal attack on Sen. McConnell. The Democratic Party is not the one of years past; the Left has taken control. Decency has gone of the window, and American values no longer count in their eyes.

U.S. desperately needs unity, not divisiveness

This country is slowly going to “H” in a handbasket. The “two-party” system is a joke and a detriment to the successful management of a country of our size. Two sides of the “aisle.” “Left” and “Right” factions. Petty arguments based strictly along “party lines.” Blind obedience to the guidelines of the “party” instead of for the country as a whole. These are only a sample of the divisions that exists in our country. What we need is “one party – the American party.” Let the most qualified individuals participate in the governing of our country. Call an end to this constant bickering between our so-called leaders and instead create a government led by “Americans” (not Democrats or Republicans). This sounds extremely difficult, but it is doable. We need unity in this country rather the divisiveness currently downgrading it by the constant bickering.

LBJ’s Great Society not to blame for our woes

A recent letter blames President Lyndon Johnson’s policies for crime and other social maladies (“Liberals’ policies, not guns, create ‘crisis,’” Readers Write, Sept. 25). That old dog won’t hunt. Our nation has been lurching Rightward since Nixon. We’re now living in Ronald Reagan’s dystopia, and fascism is at the door. Under Republicans, Great Society programs have been largely demolished, except for Medicare. Income inequality is widening and throttling our economy; perversely, this increases support for the Trumpian swindle. Our government is being rendered unrepresentative by automated gerrymandering, voter ID laws, poll closures, absentee ballot abuses, and Internet hacking. Packing the courts with ideologues enhances the arbitrary power and impunity of the executive while threatening the protections afforded by the Bill of Rights and 14th Amendment. The writer notes that so far, none of his six firearms has discharged itself. Maybe it’s worth noting that, so far in 2018, there have been 1,358 unintentional shootings, and 507 children have been shot.

Removing confederate names won’t fix problems

Thank God that the highly offensive Confederate-named street signs and monuments around Atlanta are finally on their way out. It’s great knowing that with these horrible symbols of the past destroyed, the fatherless homes and crime rates in the African-American community will decrease. And as a bonus, because Atlanta is open to historical destruction and revision, Amazon will definitely select Atlanta for its HQ2. Why wouldn’t they? Because in addition to this becoming a safer city, inner city high school test scores will rise and the concept of a failing school will become a distant memory, thus giving Amazon a better-educated workforce. But I do question what the next target(s) will be when every vestige of the past is removed, yet no noticeable social changes take place. Who or what will become the next targets?
