McConnell needs to ‘man up’ and vote

I read with dismay U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s continuing refusal to hold a confirmation hearing and vote on Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court. I regard the refusal to do so as a failure of responsibility on McConnell’s part. The Senate needs to carry out its responsibilities under the Constitution. As Republican Senator Mark Kirk says, his colleagues should just “man up and take a vote.” The solution is simple — hold a hearing and if Judge Garland is found unqualified, vote “no.” Just to be clear, if the party roles were reversed, I would feel the same way. In my mind, obstructionism is the same whether done by Mitch McConnell or Harry Reid.

NFL’s threat should be met with skepticism

After reading in your paper the possibility of the NFL in effect declaring war against the state of Georgia and faith-based people (“Bill jeopardizes Superbowl bid,” March 19), I have to admit my first reaction was a little anxiety. But not to worry, The NFL will never risk cutting ticket sales in half across the nation. Hordes of faith-based people are in all 50 states and they go to ball games. Would that total to several hundred million dollars or some outlandish amount? I don’t think the NFL would ever risk losing that amount, no matter what their misguided principle. And if they did, so what? Then faith-based people would just have that much more money for Godly purposes, including giving that much more to the poor. Sounds like Romans 8:28 to me, “All things work together for good to those that love the Lord and are the called according to His purpose.”
