Schools need better parents, not money

In “Atlanta’s decline nearing Detroit’s” on May 22, Jay Bookman may have the statistics correct on the decline of Atlanta’s middle class, but I take exception with his proposal that an increase in funding for education will solve the problem. The United States spends more money than most countries in the world on education and where has that gotten us?

The issue is the lack of parental guidance at home starting in the early years. By the time most children reach school age, no amount of money poured into the educational system will correct what has been done at home up until that time. Just ask any teacher.

LEE BAKER, LILBURN

Lee’s leadership a boon to Cobb

A central theme in Cobb County’s elections was the decision to use public funds to help build a new ballpark for the Braves. I wanted to share the perspective of a Cobb-based business. Ten years ago, we chose Cobb’s Cumberland area for Gas South’s headquarters. In 2014, we extended our lease through 2025 and doubled our office space to accommodate our company’s growth. The new stadium development and Cobb’s attractive business climate were driving factors in that decision. SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta are already attracting quality investment. Improvements are underway to address traffic concerns and increase walkability, including a planned pedestrian bridge over I-285. The positive impact of the Braves project is already increasing the tax base and creating new jobs. Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee should be congratulated for his visionary leadership, which I am confident will benefit the county and region for decades to come.
