Legislators must stop playing games

The shutdown of the government never should have happened, and should never happen again.

During the Obama administration, in opposition to Obamacare, Republicans played the “If I can’t have my way” game I’ll act like a child, withhold my vote on funding the government and shut down the government.

Last week, Democrats, in an effort to give sanctuary to illegal aliens, played the same childish game, acted like a child, withheld their vote on funding the government and shut down the government.

It is time for all members of Congress to stop playing their childish game and start legislating, as the Constitution dictates – not according to a “rule” agreed to by members of Congress.

Members of Congress must cease attaching riders to bills of appropriation and shutting down the government; any member of Congress can, and should sponsor a bill to be considered for any legislation desired – no more riders – no more of playing their childish game.

Paper ballots a better choice for elections

It’s heartening to read that we seem to be moving toward paper ballots, and that the measure has bipartisan support.

There may be no evidence that our machines were hacked, but there’s widespread suspicion that some of them were fiddled with during the Handel-Ossoff election.

Is it possible to have paper ballots for the 2018 midterms? The midterms promise to be a major event. Must we use outmoded, vulnerable technology again for what is the essence of democracy — choosing our representatives?

Let’s remove all grounds for suspicion. When citizens take time to vote, they need to be confident that their votes will be counted. Correctly.
