Don’t support discrimination with Scripture

Star Parker uses Scripture (“Christians being persecuted by the pro-homosexual left,” Opinion, Jan. 18) to support the discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender persons by conservative Christians. Does she not remember that Scripture has been used and continues to be used to support the institution of slavery and the denial of the rights of women?

Should a conservative Christian be able to own slaves just because of a Scriptural passage? Should a man be able to silence his wife for the same reason? Scripture has been used out of context for all sorts of discriminatory and sometimes cruel actions. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I learned long ago that Scripture loses its meaning when taken out of the context of the culture when it was written and when taken out of the context of the larger narrative in which it appears. Surely, Ms. Parker realizes that? If not, she might want to educate herself. Jesus said nothing about this issue. The favorite “Bible bombs” come from selected writings attributed to St. Paul and from the Hebrew Scriptures. One can support pretty much anything in Scripture by removing it from context. I doubt that was ever the intent.

Casinos anxious to make money off citizens

Ah, those lovely gambling casinos! Reminds me of a line from an old song, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” Major gambling businesses are eager to get started in Georgia, even with very high taxes. They are anxious to make money off of poor Georgia citizens just to help a handful of hard-up Georgia students get scholarships. Brings tears to my eyes! State Sen. Brandon Beach and Rep. Ron Stephens feel the same way. So watch out Nevada. We may soon have our own “Georgia peaches” doing the can-can onstage just for the goodness of Georgia’s high-minded citizens and their itch to get rich. Oh the humanity of it all!
