Too many ignore Trump’s notable accomplishments
AJC letter writers and articles castigate President Trump's accomplishments. Look at his first two years in office: On the economy, the Dow Jones average increased from 19,827 on Jan. 19, 2017, to 25,883 on Feb. 15, 2019, a 30 percent increase. November 2018 unemployment was at a 49-year low. He endeavored to reduce trade imbalances with China and the European Union by over a half-trillion dollars. He called for new trade pacts with Canada and Mexico. On national defense, he raised defense budgets to $700 billion and increased plane and ship inventories. He is withdrawing troops from Afghanistan and Syria. In foreign affairs, he's on a first-name basis with North Korea's leader and is negotiating the first peace in the region in over 60 years. He may eliminate communism from Venezuela and secure the U.S. border with Mexico. JAMES H. RUST, POLICY ADVISER, THE HEARTLAND INSTITUTE
Political backbiting may undo our great system
In classic vendetta style, one political party often goes after prominent figures in the other party. For example, the same people who were yelling "lock her up" not long ago are now outraged Democrats are hounding the president and his folks. When a Democrat next resides in the White House and the GOP has Congress, expect the roles to reverse yet again. When will it ever stop? One of the great things about this country is the (relatively) smooth transitions of power after an election. But of late these vengeful attempts to "get" one's political enemies undermine that. Refusing to concede an election loss undermines that. One day, our diminishing ability to accept the legitimacy of our political opposites may undo this great system of ours. I am a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, but when we have a Democratic president, he is my president, too. – ART GARDNER, MARIETTA
