History shows socialism is deadly, ruinous path
We are supposed to learn from mistakes, but when it comes to socialism, we make the same mistakes over and over. Just about everywhere socialism has been adopted, destitution and dictatorship have followed. The number of persons in socialist countries who died from starvation is staggering: Communist China, 1959-1961, 30 million; North Korea, 1994-1998, 2.5 million to 3 million; and Venezuela, 2018, ? Winston Churchill is said to have remarked that a 20-year-old who rejected socialism did not have a heart, but a 40-year-old who supported socialism did not have a brain. The socialist creed is "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." It sounds good, but it does not work. Socialists may be well-intentioned, but as most persons with adult life experiences know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. – STUART GALISHOFF, PROFESSOR EMERITUS, GA. STATE UNIV.
Abe Lincoln would be shocked at today’s GOP
On the 210th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, it’s fitting to recall what made him our greatest president. Lincoln’s greatness lay in his ability to grow and his belief in moral politics. Lincoln transcended his early racist views to champion black emancipation, citizenship and voting rights. Lincoln saw the Civil War as God’s judgment on America for the sin of slavery. Lincoln would be heartbroken the GOP sold out Reconstruction and abandoned Southern blacks to a century of apartheid, exploitation and terror. He would be shocked how eagerly the GOP embraced the mantle of racism once the Democrats finally discarded it, and would denounce GOP efforts to suppress black votes. As a fierce critic of anti-immigrant demagogues, he would condemn his party’s descent into immigrant-bashing. And as a deeply humble, ethical man, he would repudiate the modern GOP’s unbridled hubris and unprincipled pursuit of profit and power.
