Letter-writer ‘spot-on’ about veils

The letter-writer from Dec. 8 (“Bill banning veil not un-American”) was — using up-date terminology — “spot on.” One of the oldest slogans in existence goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” These millions of immigrants (some “legally” and quite a few “illegally”) that pour into our country should, at the very least, adapt to the way things are done in this country. Our government (and all the way down to our local governments) should require such compliance. At the risk of sounding harsh, I would say to these folks, “If you don’t like the way things are done in this country, please feel free to return to whence you came!”

GOP care more about party than country

How many times did Congressional Republicans investigate Benghazi? Yet there is no outrage over the Russians hacking our elections? Or that President-elect Trump nominates for Secretary of State a man who has troubling, close ties to Vladimir Putin?

There were shouts of “lock her up” at Trump campaign events because of Mrs. Clinton’s use of a private email server. But there is no outrage over Mr. Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns or put his business into a blind trust? No outrage that he is going to continue as executive producer of a reality show in his “spare time”?

There was outrage that major contributors to the Clinton Foundation were allowed to have meetings with Secretary of State Clinton. But there is no outrage that Mr. Trump basically sold a cabinet membership to the largest contributor of the Trump Foundation?

All of this would not be as problematic if we had a Congress that is willing to do their duty and exercise checks and balances. Frighteningly, we have a Republican Party that appears to be more loyal to their party than to their country. So far, the Republican leadership in Congress has shown no inclination to do anything but remain silent.
