Like many areas of government, the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention faces budget cutbacks. Today, a researcher asserts that the agency should reserve its funding for its core mission — immunizations and food safety, for example — rather than fighting social ills, such as alcohol abuse and tobacco addiction. The CDC responds that it has a broad mission to protect public health.
