You've seen them marching (ok, shuffling) toward cabins in the woods. You've seen them descending on unsuspecting high schoolers who just want to spend some quality time at the lake. Maybe, you’ve seen them in your nightmares.
Considered undead and really bad joggers, they're zombies and this weekend is their time to shine.
Though there are not a lot of hard numbers to back this up, Halloween has to be the Christmas (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, et al.) of a zombie calendar -- what with all of the folks who are not undead (aka: alive) tooling around dark neighborhoods dressed as Donald Trump.
The potential for scoring some human brains to eat has to be way up there.
So, what do you do if you want to, you know, blend this weekend? No sense taking the chance of being recognized as having a pulse. Try these tips to get your zombie on.
Going green
There are two schools of thought when it comes to why zombies are green. The first one is commercial, according to helpzombies.com. The color green was substituted for red in early video games because gamers in other countries were not so much fans of spurting red streams of blood and/or guts.
No doubt game marketers came up with the perfect solution to the question "How do we make blood not look so blood-like?"
Answer: Make it green.
The second reason why zombies have such a verdant look, helpzombies offers, is that everyone in the 70s and 80s who made a movie chose neon green to be part of the palette. What looks better than neon green monsters? Really, nothing.
But your modern zombie is apparently a monster of a different color if the folks who bring you "The Walking Dead" are to be believed. Long (un)dead is the idea that green, for lack of a better term, is good. Nope, none of that on set. You're looking at your browns and your earth tones for 2015 zombies. Check out the tips below.
That zombie look
If you want to get the authentic zombie look, The Guardian is offering easy to follow tips for making zombie makeup from common household items, courtesy of the folks from AMC's "The Walking Dead."
One nod to "Show Business" is the zombie makeup base. The show's producers suggest you use a water-based makeup called Aquacolor. It's described in the story as a "yellowish-brown base color" that "pales you out." Then you add dried blood colors. However, you should be careful to keep everything muted. Oh, and don't forget shading. Shading is important.
And while we are on the subject, don't overdo it, nobody likes a flashy zombie.
What about the outfit?
Want to get the "realistic" zombie look? Click here for some tips. Big Fish Games Zombie Survival Guide suggests you shop thrift stores for cut-rate zombie rags. No need to go in debt to look undead. The only way to mess this one up is to look nice -- zombies are not really known for being snappy dressers.
With whom would you fight zombies?
"The Walking Dead" actress Sonequa Martin-Green (for conspiracy theorists, her last name is no accident), told The Daily Mail that while fighting the undead is only her day job, she sometimes fantasizes about a "dream team" of zombie slayers. Whom would she choose? Superman, Wonder Woman, martial arts legend Bruce Lee and, of course, Tarzan -- goes without saying.
Looking for a zombie connection?
The car service Lyft is going Uber one better this Halloween weekend. Uber delivered cute little kitties to offices on Thursday which happened to be "National Cat Day" (love the less traditional family holidays). Lyft is taking it a bit darker, guaranteeing that they can have a zombie at your door on Friday between 8-10 p.m. As long as you live in New York or San Francisco -- coastal zombies, I guess.
Zombies in film
Here's a partial list of zombie films you may want to check out -- and why wouldn't you? I'm looking for the re-mastered version of "Redneck Zombies."
