Watch Ellen DeGeneres' empowering Teen Choice Awards speech

Ellen DeGeneres accepted her Teen Choice Award for Choice Comedian with an empowering speech to the young people in the audience.

"It feels good to be chosen, but there was a time in my life that I was not chosen. I was the opposite of chosen because I was different. And I think I want to make sure that everyone knows that what makes you different right now makes you stand out later in life. So you should be proud of being different," DeGeneres said during the Teen Choice Awards.

DeGeneres' touching speech was a nod to her struggle to come out as gay in the public eye.

As you'll recall, after hiding her sexual orientation for years, she talked about being a lesbian during a 1997 interview with Oprah. (Video via CBS / "The Oprah Winfrey Show")

DeGeneres made sure to thank the woman who helped make that possible: her wife, actress Portia di Rossi.

"What an amazing day this is! This is my seven-year wedding anniversary, so happy anniversary!" DeGeneres said to di Rossi from the stage.
