San Francisco police are looking for the group of people responsible for a rash of vandalism targeting Smart Cars.
Three Smart Cars were vandalized in the Bernal Heights neighborhood and another in the Portola neighborhood.
One couple told KTVU the sight of their silver Smart Car, flipped over-wheels up, was funny and upsetting at the same time.
They said a loud noise around 1 a.m. Monday woke them up.
"We heard the noise. It sounded like a crunching sound," said Andrea Smith, whose Smart Car was severely damaged.
"I heard some people holler – what sounded like joy – and take off in an SUV or something," said her husband, Andrew Smith.
They didn't realize it was the sound of their Smart Car being flipped onto its roof until a neighbor came to their door and told them.
"It's definitely violent. Maybe it's a prank. I'm not trying to figure out why. It's a really stupid thing," said Andrea Smith.
The couple's Smart Car was one of four vandalized Monday morning. The attacks took place within a half-hour.
Police said the suspect descriptions are vague – a group of people wearing hoodies leaving the scene in a SUV.
"I don't think they're targeting a segment of people. We’re not hearing from anyone calling up and bragging that they did this," said San Francisco Police Captain Tim Falvey.
Stepanie Thai relies on her Smart Car to get to work.
She's worried her car will be targeted and says she plans to install an alarm.
"It's a little nerve-wracking," Thai said.
Shelley Gallivan is keeping an eye on a Smart Car for a friend who lives out of state.
It too was tipped to the side by vandals early Monday.
Gallivan said she's glad the car still runs.
"We're talking about having neighborhood watch, putting in video cameras, and the lights, the motion sensor lights," Gallivan said.
As for the Smiths, they said their Smart Car in now in the shop, but they don't know if it's totaled.
"I want another Smart Car. It's not going to deter me from having another one," said Andrea Smith.
Police told KTVU they're hoping to get surveillance footage from neighbors to help them catch the people responsible.
If caught, the perpetrators face felony vandalism charges.
