A massive manhunt continues for two convicted murderers who escaped from a New York prison over the weekend. 1. Why were they in prison? Matt is serving 25 years to life for the 1997 kidnapping, dismembering and killing of his former boss. Sweat is serving a life sentence without parole for killing a sheriff's deputy in 2002.
3. How did they escape? In a plot compared to "The Shawshank Redemption," Matt and Sweat used power tools to cut through the wall of their cell, break a brick wall and slice through a steam pipe, where they left a drawing of an Asian caricature with the words, "Have a nice day," according to the AP. They reportedly crawled through tunnels and eventually emerged from a manhole cover outside.
It is not yet known how they obtained the power tools or kept others from hearing them. "They had to be heard," Gov. Andrew Cuomo told ABC's "Good Morning America."
4. Where are they now? "They could be literally anywhere," New York State Police Maj. Charles Guess told CNN. The prison is about 20 miles from the Canadian border, and Matt has ties to Mexico. Officials with the U.S. Marshals Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation are assisting with the manhunt, which also includes international authorities.
5. A $100,000 reward has been offered for information leading to their capture. If you see men meeting their descriptions, please call 911, 1-800-GIVE-TIP or New York State Police at (518) 563-3761.
