Social media helped reunite a family with its dog stolen in September.

Dom, the Wilkins’ dog, was stolen, its microchip was removed and his white spots dyed black in an attempt to conceal the animal.

"When they left his collar here and took him, it's the worst feeling in the world," Jennifer Wilkins told WFTS. "And not knowing if we'd ever get him back, you lost a little bit of hope every single day."

viral post on Facebook helped bring Dom back. The family was getting hundreds of leads, many of which were fabrications. Then they got a call that seemed legitimate.

The man said he was wandering around his property when he found a dog, the Wilkins said on Facebook. When the man whistled, the dog immediately ran to him. The man said he remember the post and contacted the Wilkins because the dog looked similar.

Joe Wilkins knew it was Dom as soon as he pulled up Wednesday.

"The widespread awareness that he was missing brought him back to us," Joe Wilkins said.

Dom was taken to the veterinarian and is recovering.
