A 9-year-old Tennessee girl died from an apparent asthma attack after watching a fireworks celebration, the Citizen Tribune reported.

Lourdes Trevino of the East Tennessee community of Bybee was watching a fireworks display with her older brother and sister when she began having trouble breathing, the Citizen Tribune reported. Family members said her breathing difficulties likely came from the smoke that accompanied the fireworks.

When Trevino returned to her home. she told her grandmother she could not breathe. Delia Garcia said she gave her granddaughter a breathing treatment but called an ambulance when the girl’s condition worsened.

“They took her straight to the hospital, but by the time we reached the hospital she wasn’t breathing,” Garcia told the Citizen Tribune.

Trevino died at the hospital.

The Tennessee Department of Health said asthma is a serious lung disease. During an asthma attack, the airways become narrow, making it difficult to breathe.
