A group of students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia walked out of class in protest over what they viewed as a racist tweet posted by a school administrator.
The tweet in question is actually a retweet from a humor site. The controversial tweet was posted by the school administrator in June, but students just discovered it recently, according to local news reports.
Protesting students say they don’t want the administrator to lose her job, but they do want the issue to be discussed and some type of punishment to be enacted.
In a public statement, Norfolk Federation of Teachers President Thomas Calhoun said in part, “I do think an NPS employee tweeting or retweeting this type of message is disturbing.”
The local chapter of the NAACP has launched its own investigation into the matter.
