Texas Sen. Ted Cruz announced Tuesday he would suspend his bid for the Republican nomination for president after a crushing loss in the Indiana primary.
With Cruz gone, the path has been cleared for New York businessman Donald Trump to be the nominee of the Republican party in the 2016 election.
"It appears that path has been foreclosed," Cruz told supporters in Indianapolis. "Together, we left it all on the field of Indiana. We gave it everything we've got, but the voters chose another path, and so with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
The Republican National Committee made the announcement Tuesday via a tweet that Trump is the presumptive nominee.
The announcement came a week after he named former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina as his running mate.
Cruz was joined on stage with his parents, as well as by Fiorina and his wife, Heidi.
He made no mention of the Republican front-runner, vowing instead to continue his fight for liberty and for the Constitution.
Earlier in the day, Cruz went after Trump after he endorsed a story in the National Enquirer that claimed Cruz's father was with Lee Harvy Oswald, John F. Kennedy's assassin, shortly before he murdered the president.
In a final appearance on Tuesday morning in Indiana, Cruz called Trump a “pathological liar” and “utterly amoral.”
