Indianapolis principal Susan Jordan had been principal at Amy Beverland Elementary School for more than 20 years, CNN reported. She was helping load children into buses Tuesday when one of them suddenly lurched forward and jumped the curb. Jordan pushed several students out of the way.

Authorities said two students she saved, both 10-year-olds, sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The bus driver said she's not sure what caused the bus to accelerate, but she said she saw the principal push children out of the way.

The school posted a tribute to Jordan that was originally made in May 2015 on its social media accounts.

The district has canceled classes.
