A family got a fowl surprise while traveling in Indiana Tuesday, when a 30-pound turkey slammed through the windshield of their rental car, La Porte County sheriff’s deputies said.
The Tarabocchia family was traveling west on U.S. 20, bound for Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, when the bird flew into the windshield of their rented GMC SUV, WBBM reported.
"I thought he was (going to) clear the roof, but he didn't," the SUV's driver, John Tarabocchia, told the Indianapolis Star. "He went straight through the windshield."
Deputies said the turkey was killed on impact. Three of the four people in the car suffered minor injuries, according to WBBM.
“They are very fortunate not to have been hurt, if you see how far that turkey impaled into that interior compartment," Capt. Michael Kellems told the Star.
He said four turkeys were flying across the roadway, when one of them collided with the SUV around 9:30 a.m. CST.
A passerby from Chicago stopped when he spotted the accident to ask whether he could take the turkey home, according to WBBM. Authorities gave him a road kill permit on the spot.
“I’m sure he’s going to enjoy a meal,” Kellems told WBBM.
Authorities warned that during turkey mating season, wild turkeys can be as dangerous to drivers as deer.
