A husband and wife duo could have spoiled some football fans’ party Thursday when they attempted to heist more than 100 beers from a tailgate party, according to Austin police.
Jose and Sandra Hernandez, aged 49 and 45 respectively, have been charged with misdemeanor theft in connection with an incident that took place just after kick off Thursday at a tailgate party at 16th and Lavaca streets, an arrest affidavit said.
Police responded after witnesses reported two men fighting. After a few minutes of sorting out the altercation, police learned that the Hernandezes had attempted to steal a large amount of alcoholic beverages, mainly beer, the arrest affidavit said.
Sandra Hernandez had backed up a pickup to the party’s tent while Jose Hernandez hopped out and began loading beer into the truck’s bed, the affidavit said. They then drove off, but by then the host of the tailgate party had jumped into the back of the moving truck and started fighting Jose Hernandez, the affidavit said.
Sandra Hernandez had made it around the block, then drove back to the party as the altercation continued, the affidavit said. She later admitted to knowing that her husband was going to steal beer and other alcoholic beverages, which had a total value of about $400, according to the host of the party. The value is an estimation only, because the man did not have receipts for the alcohol, the affidavit said.
Authorities say the Hernandezes attempted to steal the following:
- 104 assorted beers in a plastic tub filled with ice
- Three small Corona ice chests
- Four 1-gallon juice jugs, assorted flavors
- One bottle of wine
- One Tito's Vodka rubber mat
- Unknown number of beers found scattered in the truck's bed
