A girl and her grandfather's day trip through the desert last weekend did not go as planned.
First, Paul Rater, 62, forgot his phone behind.
Then, when the truck broke down, he left his granddaughter alone with a loaded gun to "shoot the bad guys," according to a news report.
He was then found at a bar, having a burger and drinking a beer, 10 miles away while the girl was napping under a tree, the report says.
Rater called his wife as soon as he got to the bar, he said. Firefighters found the girl and returned her to her mother.
Authorities say he did not mention the girl to anyone else while seeking help.
The grandfather faces child abuse and endangerment charges, the report says.
