Orlando police said a man was able to steal thousands of dollars by using a fake license he got from the DMV.
Investigators said William Harris was homeless, but was able to dupe the DMV into giving him the license and trick SunTrust banks into letting him withdraw thousands of dollars from an account that wasn’t his last month.
Police believe other people provided him with stolen personal information and brought him to the DMV, where he obtained a license with the name Craig Uttley.
Police are working to figure out how it happened and who else may have been involved.
“You would figure they would have more stops, breaks, something that would keep that from happening,” said driver Garfield Burton.
Harris told police someone picked him up and instructed him on what to do.
“They would take him to different branches and tell him how much to withdraw,” said Michelle Guido, of the Orlando Police Department.
One of the transactions raised a red flag. Police said Harris tried to withdraw $85,000, but there wasn’t that much money in the account.

The victim told police his personal information was also used to try to get an ATM card and lines of credit.
Now police are looking into who might have been working with Harris.
“If anything can happen, it can happen in Florida. It’s what we’re known for. Any kind of stupid stuff can happen,” said driver Shannon Rodgers.
The tax collector’s office sent a statement to Channel 9 Friday, which said an employee just beginning fraud detection training handled the transaction for the license.
The victim is 24 years older than the suspect.
