Etizolam is a powerful sedative that's making its way onto college campuses. With qualities similar to Xanax and Valium, the drug is meant for conditions like anxiety, depression and insomnia.
But, experts say it's getting into the wrong hands and being used for harm.
The drugs are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but they're being shipped into America from other countries.
Authorities across the U.S. are warning that the drug is popping up on college campuses, like the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
"It's terrifying living on a college campus,” said UNCC student Khortany Hamlin.
Currently Etizolam can be bought in bulk online, and its popularity is quickly spreading--and not just on college campuses. According to WSB, the drug is becoming popular among teens..
The drug can sedate someone to the point of passing out. Experts have said the drug isn't detected in many drug tests.
"You wake up the next morning, don't know what happened to you, and you get a blood test, and there's nothing saying you had anything. That's really scary," said college student Fia Dibari.
Administrators tasked with educating women about sexual assault say they're not surprised by the way the drug is being used.
"Unfortunately it's nothing new. Every few years you hear about different techniques," said sex assault educator Nicole Madonna-Rosario.
Administrators said drugs like this may contribute to underreporting when it comes to sexual assaults.
"Many survivors are not reporting or getting medical attention for numerous reasons -- shame, embarrassment, lack of memory -- a lot of these drugs make them not remember," Madonna-Rosario said.
They said a good defense against the newest drug is to watch out for each other while partying.
"If they can't consent you need to help them," Madonna-Rosario said.
