People living in the Oregon town of Forest Grove are baffled by a high-pitched shrieking noise they've been hearing recently.

Residents say they first heard the noise several weeks ago and say that it happens at any time of day, according KATU.

One neighbor posted a 30-second video to social media, hoping someone would identify the source of the noise, but so far, no one has been able to crack the case.

The fire department says it is aware of the situation, but hasn't been able to locate the origin of the noise. The department says it isn’t any kind of emergency alarm.

Some residents say it sounds like a car braking, or a train on railroad tracks.

Local utilities have denied responsibility for the sound.

Police say if a person is doing this intentionally, they are violating a city noise ordinance.
