Workers at the cemetery say wet ground likely caused the base of a headstone to sink, allowing it to topple on top of Stephen Woytack.
Police say Stephen and his wife Lucy were decorating the grave of his mother-in-law when the accident happened.
"They tie a cross to it every year, the both of them," caretaker Ed Kubilus told WNEP. "After they're done tying the cross to it, they stand there, say prayers, and then they leave," he went on.
Kubilus said the Woytack’s came to the cemetery “several times a year” to care for the family grave site.
WQAD reports the pair had recently moved their own burial plots to a spot near the same spot where the accident happened.
